Urban regeneration for climate-neutral cities: insights from the third Bocconi Masterclass

The third Masterclass of the Bocconi series “Regenerating the City: strategies and tools to manage transformations and create value” took place on October 9, 2025, focusing on “Urban regeneration for climate neutrality and resilience”.
Professionals and experts shared valuable perspectives on how urban regeneration can address and manage the climate crisis, highlighting its dual role in mitigation and adaptation. Starting from the challenges posed by the decarbonisation of existing building stock and the management of climate risks, the Masterclass examined innovative solutions, tools, and policies supporting climate neutrality at the urban level.
The programme was structured around three thematic sessions:
- The first explored how urban regeneration contributes to emission reduction, focusing on the regulatory framework, the concept of carbon neutrality, and methods for assessing life-cycle emissions in buildings.
- The second addressed strategies to manage and reduce climate risks in urban contexts.
- The third presented case studies of cities that have set and implemented climate neutrality and resilience goals.
The event offered participants the opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of net-zero urban regeneration, while engaging with concrete examples and applied experiences.
Keynote speakers included:
- Marco Caffi, Director, Green Building Council Italia
- Federica Selleri, Director, Property Valuation, CRIF Real Estate Services
- Ilaria Giuliani, Director, Urban Resilience Project Office and Chief Resilience Officer, Municipality of Milan
- Francesca Giordano, Senior Technologist, ISPRA
- Paolo Cresci, Associate Director Milan, Europe Urban Energy Leader, ARUP
The Masterclass series is organised by Bocconi University, with the support of GBC Italia, within the framework of the MUSA project – Spoke 1.
The initiative is patronised by the Order of Architects PPC of the Province of Milan, which we warmly thank for its collaboration.
